IN2WIBE 2.0 Inaugural Workshop
Health and Well-Being in the Built Environment: An Interdisciplinary Exchange
June 12th – 13th, 2026 | National University of Singapore
The workshop convened an international group of experts across exposure and environmental health sciences, microbiology, virology, environmental chemistry, aerosol science, building science, engineering, architecture, design, public health, and the social and behavioral sciences. Its goal was to advance interdisciplinary research on health and well-being in the built environment, with a particular focus on indoor exposure science, indoor environmental quality, and associated health outcomes.
Through short presentations, cross-disciplinary reflection sessions, breakout discussions, and collaborative planning activities, participants examined how indoor environmental factors—such as air quality, temperature, lighting, and humidity—affect human health. The workshop also identified critical research gaps and fostered new collaborations aimed at accelerating the development of evidence-based strategies, standards, and policies to support healthier, more resilient, and human-centered buildings and communities. In addition, the event marked an important milestone in expanding the IN2WIBE international network and strengthening long-term partnerships across institutions and disciplines.
The workshop was developed through six months of biweekly planning meetings by the steering committee. A total of 45 participants attended, including 24 from the United States. Following the short presentations and panel discussions, participants identified priority topics for further discussion. Based on group voting, four key themes were selected for breakout sessions:
- Building design and operation
- Building exposomic characteristics
- Communities and people
- Policy, regulation, and standards/guidelines
